Science & Management Linkages Initiative
People:
  • Dean WendtCo-Director, Associate Professor, Biological Sciences Department, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
  • Dan BermanCo-Director, Director, Morro Bay National Estuary Program
  • Don MaruskaCo-Director, Don Maruska & Company
What is it?
This initiative will provide linkages between science and policy. Some of the key components of ecosystem-based management have been utilized in the Morro Bay area. However, critical gaps remain in scientific understanding, institutional jurisdictions and cooperation. The SLOSEA program builds upon the watershed-based work of the Morro Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP) and the coastal ocean efforts of the Marine Interest Group (MIG) to fill these gaps through focused scientific research and new institutional linkages between and among resource management agencies and stakeholders.

Goals
The primary goal of SLOSEA is to develop and share a high-quality understanding of the ecosystem and to employ this knowledge to facilitate conservation, restoration and sustainable use of the ecosystem.

The goal of this initiative is to translate and synthesize the results of the five science initiatives to create "Management Action Memos." These documents can then be used by policy-makers and management agencies in their decision-making processes.

What's Happening?
2009-Apr-24: Draft versions of the third and fourth Management Action Memos — "Protecting Coastal Environments from Ongoing Pollution Danger"  and   "Managing Visitor Access to Rocky Intertidal Areas" — are now available.
2009-Apr-24: Final versions of the first two Management Action Memos — "Take in Newly-Opened Rocky Intertidal Areas"  and   "Stopping the Spread of Invasive Species on Ship Hulls" — are now available.
